Brain Injury Specialist

Marc’s work sits at the intersection of professional training and lived experience. He knows what it means to move through systems that see the behavior without seeing the injury underneath it — and he knows what changes when the right questions are asked.

Today, he helps individuals, families, professionals, and organizations recognize brain injury and respond more effectively through screening, education, practical strategy support, training, and consultation.

The result is a practice shaped equally by credentials and by compassion.

The Story Behind the Work

Understanding brain injury from the inside out

Marc’s understanding of brain injury began long before it became his profession. His first traumatic brain injury occurred at age 12, and he went on to experience 12+ traumatic brain injuries across childhood and adulthood. Repetitive impacts continued through years of football, including through the college level, along with other serious injuries later in life.

For decades, the neurological history behind those experiences was largely missing from the explanation. Symptoms and behaviors were often treated or interpreted on their own terms — through addiction and self-medication, repeated treatment systems, psychiatric settings, homelessness, incarceration, and other significant consequences — while the underlying brain injury went unrecognized. Systems responded to what they could see without seeing what might be underneath it.

Eventually recognizing the role of brain injury changed Marc’s understanding of his own history and recovery. It did not erase the years that came before. It added a framework that made sense of them — one that could sit alongside behavioral, psychiatric, addiction, and justice perspectives rather than replace them.

That lived experience became professional purpose. Marc returned to many of the same kinds of systems he once navigated — substance use treatment, corrections, justice and reentry, and other high-risk community settings — this time as a professional helping identify brain injury that may otherwise be missed.

Today he is a Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS) and Brain Injury Specialist whose work combines that lived experience with frontline professional practice, screening, education, training, consultation, and systems implementation. The history behind the work gives it credibility; the training and practice give it structure.

From Lived Experience to Professional Practice

Returning to the systems he once navigated

Recovery eventually led Marc back into many of the same systems he had once experienced from the other side — but now in a professional role. He spent years in frontline work across corrections, substance use treatment, youth residential care, coaching, and settings serving people facing complex behavioral, neurological, justice, and recovery challenges.

That work gave him direct experience inside the systems and populations where brain injury is so often missed: people moving through addiction treatment, justice and reentry programs, homelessness services, behavioral health care, and other high-risk community settings. He saw the same patterns repeatedly — behaviors and diagnoses in the foreground, with the underlying neurological piece rarely examined.

Those years of practice gave him something that credentials alone cannot: the ability to recognize brain injury not only as someone who has lived with it, but as a practitioner who has worked inside the very settings where it is most frequently overlooked.

That combination of lived experience and frontline practice led him to become a Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS) and to develop a professional focus on recognizing brain injury where it is missed — and on helping systems respond more effectively once it is seen.

“I do this work because I know what it costs when brain injury is missed — from the inside and from inside the systems trying to respond.”

Why This Matters

The neurological piece is too often missed

Brain injury can sit underneath addiction, behavioral health challenges, justice involvement, homelessness, difficulty with treatment, and behaviors that are often misunderstood.

When the neurological piece is missed, people can spend years being treated for what others can see without anyone recognizing what may be driving it.

Screening is the doorway.
Education is the intervention.
